Bergen?

The port city of Bergen, and former capital of Norway, is rather interesting. While we only spent time in the historic and superbly touristy old town, we passed through the modern city of Bergen on the way to the Bergen? airport and it does look very boring indeed. Glad we didn’t waste our time there.

Oh yes, you can actually get whale meat in the market here, in all forms from burgers to steaks.

Northern Most Point Travelled

Northern most point travelled
Current record of Balestrand, Norway, beating the last record of Loch Ness, Scotland.

There are no current plans to beat this record any time soon, and will likely be until I can hitch a ride to Reykjavik before this record will be broken.

Sognefjord in a Nutshell

Make no mistake – “Sognefjord in a Nutshell” is as descriptive as it sounds, a wonderful location that is so cramped full of people that it’s impossible to enjoy it. If you enjoy seeing more of tourists taking selfies and of others more than nature and scenery, and jousting with others for a seat on an old rickety train, this is the tour for you!

New Zealand’s TranzAlpine has a train journey that is rather comparable in my opinion, with much less people about, which contributes more to the enjoyment of the journey.

And it really isn’t that impressive, to be honest. Perhaps I’ve been spoiled by New Zealand…

Oslo

Ah Oslo, the Tiger City. Land of Der Schrei der Natur / The Scream of Nature. Owner of a giant Santa Claus holding a… an ice-cream. Let’s leave it at that. The royal palace is surprisingly minimalist, which is a recurring theme of these Nordic palaces that contrasts with the much more extravagant English ones.

Ah Oslo, if only you can be more affordable. At NZD 60 per person per basic meal with a beer, it makes Switzerland look like a bargain holiday hunter’s destination. Apparently, only Iceland tops Oslo in terms of the cost of visiting.
